My Knocking and Pinging Engine!

I get calls every week about this common but very serious engine problem.

It can appear just mildly annoying, but if left unchecked, it can cause irreversible damage.

Pre-ignition, pre-detonation, or even multiple-detonation, stems from two primary issues--a low octane number, or a secondary ignition source

A higher octane fuel (or fuel mixture) is designed (or required) to help your engine resist pre-mature detonation.

A simple remedy could be using a premium fuel, or by adding some with a fuel additive/octane boost.

The underlying problem of low octane can be caused by an improper fuel mixture--too much air and not enough fuel. In more modern cars, this can be due to clogged fuel injectors. In older cars, it can be cause by a clogged fuel jet. Either of these can be addressed with a good, strong fuel injector cleaner.

Multiple detonation is caused by a secondary ignition source--usually built-up carbon on the cylinder head or exhaust valve. This carbon can glow like an ember and ignite fuel at the very wrong time. Again, a good, strong fuel injector cleaner will work to burn off this excess carbon soot.

So, reduce carbon build up, add some octane, clean the deposits from your injectors, and take care of your knocking and pinging engine. This is what we here at Motor Purr have been doing for decades.
